Why I think Australia is great

writer: Orchi Sarkar

The reason that I think Australia is great is because of its people, safe and friendly environment, unique wildlife, sports, beaches, tourist attractions and natural heritage.

Australia is a beautiful country in the continent of Oceania. Long before the British people came, there were different types of settlers known as the aborigines, they were the only type of people in Australia for nearly 60,000 years, so before Captain James Cook discovered Australia in 1768 the aborigines all lived in peace, harmony and happiness. For the aborigines there was no written history, only fragments of dreamtime stories, cave paintings and etchings remain to record their remarkable past. The aborigines spent their time hunting, fishing, seed gathering and fruit picking, and although there are believed to be 600 or more scattered tribes they all lived happily. Each and every tribe had their very own protected boundaries so the different tribes never got into each other’s ways.

The capital city of Australia is the A.C.T (Australian Capital Territory) other wise known as Canberra. The national floral emblem of Australia is the golden wattle (Acacia pycnantha), the national animal emblem is the kangaroo, and the national gemstone is the opal. The description of the national flag is: a dark blue background with the Union Jack in the top left hand corner and the seven-pointed commonwealth star beneath it, it also contains the five-starred Southern Cross. The seven pointed star stand for the seven states of Australia. The name of the seven states are; Western Australia, South Australia, Northern Territory, New South Wales, Tasmania and ACT.

In 1951 king Gorge VI (sixth) recommended that the Australian Blue Ensign should be the national flag and the Australian Red Ensign should be the proper colour merchant ship registered in Australia. Green and gold are the national colours of Australia; the colours stand for
Australia’s lushes land (green) and its golden soil (gold). They are used at all appropriate occasions such as the Olympic and commonwealth games.

Every country has a national anthem and Australia’s national anthem is ‘Advance Australia Fair’. In Australia there is also a royal anthem that is sung to the queen or anyone from the royal family and it is called ‘God Save the Queen’.

The present coat of arms was granted by king Gorge V (fifth) in 1912, following approval of alternations by the commonwealth government. It consists of a shield divided into six parts, each containing one of the state badges. These are surrounded by an ermine border, signifying the federation of the states into the commonwealth. The shield is supported by two very important Australian animals, the kangaroo and the emu, standing on ornamental rests that look somewhat like vines, behind which are small branches of wattle. The crest consists of the seven-pointed commonwealth gold star, which symbolises national unity. At the base of the shield is a scroll on which is printed the word Australia.

Australia is a unique country that has animals that no other country has such as; kangaroo, koala, emu, platypus, possums and Tasmanian devils (they are nearly extinct). It is also the first country to start playing Football (Rugby union or Rugby league).

Some great tourist attractions are; The Sydney Opera house, The National museum of Australia, The War memorial, the gold coast, the sunshine coast, the Great Barrier Reef and South bank.

Some world heritage sites are; Shark bay (in western Australia), Australian fossil mammal sites (in south Australia), Naracoorte (in south Australia), Uluru- Kata tjuta national park (in northern territory), Kakadu national park (in northern territory), Fraser Island (in Queensland), Great barrier reef (in Queensland), Wet tropics of Queensland (in Queensland), The Greater Blue Mountain Area (in New South Wales), Central Eastern Rainforests (in New South Wales), Willandra Lakes Region (in New South Wales), Tasmanian Wilderness (Tasmania).

Australia has rain and sunshine, sand and beaches, wildlife and friendly people, great education, government and democracy. It has everything that you need to live a happy and enjoyable life.

So that is why I like Australia!
