What Makes Australia Great
“A Sunburnt Country”, “The Land Of Sweeping Plains”, “The Home Of the ‘Roo’ and Emu”- all of these terms refer to the smallest continent and largest island in the world- Australia. But why a sunburnt country? Why is Australia so special? What makes Australia great? This Australia Day everyone will be asking these questions and those who know the answers will answer proudly because it is not only our beautiful plains and landscapes that make Australia great. It is also the unity of Australian people that make this country the best in the world. Ayers Rock, The Three Sisters, The Snowy Mountains, Wave Rock, The Twelve Apostles-do these sound familiar? Of course they do. These breathtaking landmarks are why people come to Australia, this why we call Australia the land of sweeping plains. Each of these landmarks listed above (and many more) is on the Australian Heritage Site List. This is because without these iconic landmarks, Australia would be incomplete. Therefore we pay tribute to these landmarks by protecting them from danger and listing them as our heritage. This act itself is a show of how Australia is great because no other country on Earth would go to such measures to protect not only one, but a number of other landmarks that would have been forgotten in any other country. Although the Australian landscape is a major part of what makes Australia great, there are other aspects that make Australia stand out among other countries. One of these aspects is the Australian government. Unlike other countries, the Australian government strives in not only keeping Australia a united country, it also strives in democracy. By democracy I mean that everyone- yes every single person in Australia- get to vote and voice their opinions. In any other country, only those of high standards have the authority to vote, and sometimes even they don’t have the right to do that. As for voicing opinions, if you did that in some countries other than Australia you would be ignored or worse beaten up as voicing opinions would be a crime. The Australian Government believe that Australia united is a government- not just the Prime Minister and his Politicians. Setting aside government and landscape there are other things that set Australia apart from other countries. Another one of these things is our environment. Travel to places like China, Russia, India and even our own country Bangladesh and you will see that- if not in all areas- the state of these countries are horrible. Unlike Australia, these countries are don’t exactly have what you would call a healthy environment. Let’s take India for example- it is true that unlike Australia, India has more culture, tradition and better movies. Yet if you look at the living conditions there you will immediately choose Australia any day because our roads aren’t covered in potholes, our electricity doesn’t go off every morning and our suburbs don’t have rubbish dumps in them. Ask yourself- would you really want your children to grow up in an environment like that? I would think not. So this is yet another reason why Australia is great. Along with the examples above there are a number of other things that make Australia great but if I continue we might run out of pages. So with these reasons and many more, I have proved my point that Australia really is great. So this Australia Day when you are celebrating the discovery of this great land, think back to what I have said and appreciate the fact that you are able to live in this country, whether you call it “The Land of Sweeping Plains”, A Sunburnt Country” or just plain old Australia.
