Merging cultures for Bangladeshi-Australians
For many young Bangladeshi-Australians merging our two very different cultures has been difficult but rewarding. The difficulty lies in the fact that we have two strong heritages which contribute almost equally to all aspects of our life. For example a child begins a new life at school and is suddenly heavily exposed to Australian culture but still returns at the end of a school day for a traditional meal of rice and curry which is always ever present. So how do young Bangladeshi-Australians such as myself forge an identity which stays true to our Bengali background yet encompasses the Australian way of life? We do this by taking the best of both worlds and trying to combine traditions and ideals with modern Australian society. By doing this I think we are empowered to get more out of life, we are lucky that we are so aware of our heritage and deeply involved in our culture. This sets us apart from other every day Australians who do not have the privilege of being immersed in two such vibrant cultures. Therefore I do believe that having two different cultures supporting me has given me more in life as I’ve been able to learn how to unite ideals from the two and become a culturally aware individual.
